Assignment #1 Uncanny Game Characters

Uncanny Game Characters

What is Uncanny Valley?

Uncanny Valley is a term used to describe how bad visuals take away from the emotional attraction of a creation. Uncanny Valley uses a graph to show how visuals can take away from the emotional aspect of a creation. The graph is based on social perception of a creation. The graph is broken up into three catagories, Movement, Appearance, and Overall. When looking at something we tend to add human characteristics even though it may not be human, the more we start to add human characteristics to an object, the more it starts to look creepy.

A Caracter that Avoids Uncanny Valley

The characters in Castle Crashers avoid uncanny valley for the most part. They are 2D characters that have a cartoon look to them and exhibit human characteristics such as eyes and limbs. They do not have other human characteristics such as noses or ears. Their movement would be an android on the movement scale, close to a decorative robot on the appearance scale, and a toy robot on the overall scale.

An Object that Could be a Character

An object that could be a character and mostly avoid uncanny valley is a fork. A fork does not have any human characteristics so it can avoid uncanny valley. You can add very plain and simple eyes and maybe stick figure arms, and keep it 2D to avoid uncanny valley and have a character. You could even just add arms to the fork. With a fork having no similarities to a human, it is essentially starting with a clean slate.
