Forum 6: Control Light Switch: Townhome The problem with this switch is that there are four switches in the same spot. According to the reading, "but difficulties mount rapidly with more than two switches at the same location" (Don Norman, pg. 136), which would apply to this situation because there are four switches in the same location which makes it confusing. The lights control two of the lights shown below, the far left switch controls the light in the kitchen, and the far-right switch controls the one over the table, and the one to the right of the first switch on the left controls the outside light, but the switch before the last one on the right does not control anything. This makes the mapping even more confusing since there is a switch for nothing and the two indoor lights are on opposite sides of the panel. Solution My solution to the problem would be to make the switch panels separate from each other and each one closer to what they con...

LinkedIn: Internship and Entry-Level Job

LinkedIn: Internship and Entry-Level Job Internship Skills I have: I am able to satisfy the requirements of Experience with a game editor, Technical Artistic Skills, and a Game Design Portfolio. I have experience with a game editor through classes with Professor Heagney and a class with Dr. Hall, and I have also used Unity on my own time. As far as technical artistic skills go, I took two classes with Professor Heagney that achieved these goals, character design, and graphic software packages. These classes worked with photoshop and I have also used photoshop on my own time in high school. Finally, I have a game design portfolio, which was required for one of the classes that I have taken. Skills I need: Game design portfolio. While I do have a game design portfolio, it is not the most extensive and does not contain my best works. I can improve this by adding more of my works and making even more stuff to put into the portfolio. I also need proficiency in object-oriented...

Forum 5: Colors

Forum 5: Colors Colors I used the Space Invaders Template, so my start screen is based on an old arcade game machine. Based on the readings, I made put light blue in the middle of all of the dark blue because it draws attention to it. I also used the color schemes from the reading to help with the colors that I chose, so that they went together and were appealing to the eye. I also used the shape and size of the arcade-style buttons to have them there, but not be too much of the screen. I tried to keep the font space-themed because the game is based on the Space Invaders Template.

Feedback

Feedback User interface elements Diagetic  I added a menu that is in game, like a HUD, that keeps the player in the game when they press ESC to pause the game. Non-Diagetic For non-diagetic I added an ammo count that shows how much ammo is left out of the amount that the player started with. Spatial I added a message in the scene that the character is able to see in the game. Audio I made custom audio for the background music, ambient sounds, actuation buttons for the buttons throughout the game, and all of these provide some sort of feedback. An example of this is the clicking sound for a button when it is pressed. I also added audio feedback in the game for things such as when the tank moves, when the enemies fire their bombs, when the player gets hit, and other actor related sounds. Visual I created visual feedback through things such as ammo count and the player's opacity getting lower and having the tank fade to represent the health o...

Forum 4 The idea for the Game The idea of the game is that the player is hunting for sharks, but has a limited amount of air. The longer it takes the player to hunt sharks, the more the goggles fill with water and the bigger the bubbles get. The player gets a limited amount of harpoons to use to hunt the sharks. 7 Stages of Action "In general, each stage of action requires its own special design strategies and, in turn, provides its own opportunity for disaster" (The Design of Everyday Things, by Don Norman, pg. 71). This was true for some of the stages for me, as I ran into some issues with things such as what it was that I wanted to accomplish. 1. What do I want to accomplish? I want to make a game that the player is constricted by the amount of oxygen they have, and they must hunt sharks at the same time, which adds more things to pay attention to. I also want there to be bubbles that pop up on the screen when they are running out of oxygen. 2. What ...

Blog 3-UI Elements

UI Elements in Borderlands 3 Diegetic Diegetic elements in Borderlands 3 can be seen in the form of the ammo count of some guns. It is in the world and it gives feedback to the character. It also does not hinder gameplay at all. Non-Diegetic    The non-diegetic elements can be seen in the form of pop-ups that tell the user what button to hit for specific actions, such as "hold X" to swap a weapon for the one that is currently equipt. The circle around the button will fill up to complete these actions.    Spatial The spatial elements in Borderlands 3 can be seen in the form of information screens that pop up to help the user. One of the most common screens that the user will see is the information about the stats of a gun when the user is looking at it while it is on the ground. Meta Meta elements can be seen when the user gets low on health and when they go into "fight for your life." When the user's health is low, the screen sta...

UI Design Flow Charts and Wireframes Project

Image
Flow Chart and Wireframe Project Summary I decided to keep the flow chart and wireframes simple, so the user would not get confused while navigating the screens. The flow chart and wireframe were kept simple to help others understand how to read and follow it, even if they do not know what a flow chart or wireframe is. Flow Chart  This is what my flow chart looks like. It is kept simple and encompasses all of the screens that go into my game. Wireframes These are my wireframes for each screen. The wireframes do not include anything aesthetic design, but show the positions of buttons and images. Images of my screens These are just two of the many menus that came from my flow chart and wireframe. Playable Link https://scottoneil.itch.io/homelanddefender
